A note from the Mayor
Hopefully, you have been enjoying the wonderful weather that we have been experiencing in Maumelle. It’s nice to be able to participate in outside activities in the middle of winter. Some of the trees look like they are trying to bud out with the warm, sunshine filled days. I am still waiting on the “Snow Chains and Daffodils Festival” – the one snow after the yellow flowers have bloomed. I am sure we will get at least one dose of very cold weather before spring is here to stay.
January was a very busy month with new projects starting throughout the City. The improvements are continuing at the Community Center with flooring and new furniture arriving for the South Room, as well as flooring for the weight room. Our Public Works crews are working on several drainage issues around the City. The Parks and Recreation Department is working on improvements to the walking bridge over the spillway at Lake Willastein. Several new HVAC units are being installed at City Hall thanks to an Energy Grant through the Arkansas Energy Office and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Dillard’s hosted a job fair on January 14th at the Jess Odom Community Center that drew an extremely large crowd. If you are interested in an opportunity at the new Dillard’s Internet Fulfillment Center, you can contact any of the offices of the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services for additional information. The facility is scheduled to open this spring.
I met with officials of the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department in January regarding the proposed I-40 interchange. Based on those discussions, I am currently working with other local jurisdictions to seek additional financial support.
The Academics Plus Charter School held a ribbon cutting and open house in January to celebrate the completion of the APCS Elementary School building. Congressman Tim Griffin was the keynote speaker. The school architecture is similar to the Maumelle Library and the Jess Odom Community Center and will serve the community for many years to come.
We hope you are enjoying reading this newsletter. Our intent is to keep you informed of happenings within the City and City departments that may not appear in the standard media outlets.
If you have any suggestions, we would like to hear from you.
