WHAT’S RECYCLABLE? 

Listed below are examples of items accepted (or not accepted) in the City’s recycling program. Read the labels on containers to determine where acceptable items are placed.                                                                 

ACCEPTED FOR RECYCLING 

PAPER:

  • All paper should be clean--without food stain or residue.
  • Catalogs, phone books and magazines (no plastic wrap)
  • Cereal and cake boxes (no plastic liners)
  • Colored and white paper
  • Donut boxes (clean, no food stain/residue, no plastic)
  • Egg cartons (no eggs)
  • Gift wrap (no metallic), greeting cards (no musical)
  • Junk mail (plastic windows ok) but no laminated postcardsthat cannot be torn by hand)
  • Manila file folders and envelopes (no padded; clasps ok)
  • Newspaper and colored inserts
  • Paperback books (no hardbacks)
  • Pizza boxes (clean, no food stain/residue or plastic)
  • Slick or glossy paper (faxes, receipts)

PLASTIC BOTTLES & TUBS #1 - #7 (EMPTY)

PLASTIC:

  • All plastic must be marked #1 or #2*
  • All must be less than 2 gallon size.
  • Lids and caps only if marked #1 or #2
  • Plastic bottles and jars (food, peanut butter, syrup,catsup, drink or detergent, shampoo)
  • Plastic jugs (milk jugs, orange juice)  

CANS (EMPTY)

  • Aluminum cans, trays, or clean aluminum foil
  • Bimetal cans (cat food cans)
  • Metal food cans, tin and steel cans
  • Metal lids and caps (but no wire or scrap metal) 

GLASS BOTTLES & JARS (EMPTY)

Beverage bottles (any color)
Canning jars
Jam or peanut butter jars
Olive oil and vinegar bottles
Soup or spaghetti jars
Wine bottles (no corks/metal or plastic wrapper)

*Note: recycling symbols on products are a uniform labeling system for manufacturers much like a nutrition label on a soupcan for consumers. It does not mean that the particular item isaccepted for recycling. We accept only plastic BOTTLES and TUBS with a recycling symbol because they have enough market

NOT ACCEPTED

PAPER
None of these (even if “clean” unless noted):

  • Candy wrappers and chip bags
  • Donut boxes (stained/food residue)
  • Egg cartons (polystyrene foam type)
  • Fast food wrappers, cups or boxes
  • Gift wrap paper (foil or metallic)
  • Frozen food boxes or ice cream cartons
  • Hardback books or padded envelopes
  • Milk, soy, juice cartons and juice bags
  • Paper cups, plates, napkins or towels (even if unused)
  • Photographs or any plastic-coated paper
  • Pizza boxes (stained/food residue)
  • Vinyl or 3- or 2-ring style binders
  • “Waxed” (dark brown) cardboard

 
PLASTIC BOTTLES & TUBS

  • Any plastic that is NOT a bottle jar marked #1-#2
  • Any bottle, jar or tub more than 2 gallons size;
  • Black plastic; rigid plastics
  • Plastic bags of any kind
  • Bubble-wrap, straps, shrink-wrap
  • Buckets, crates, pails, laundry baskets
  • Deli/fast food “clamshells” (top-hinged-bottom)
  • Styrofoam drink cups, noodle cups, meat trays
  • Foam packaging, blocks or “peanuts”
  • Garden hoses, or swimming pools
  • Junk mail (laminated, cannot be torn by hand)
  • Photographs, negatives, microfiche, “overheads”
  • Plant pots, plastic tarps, bender board
  • Plastic drink glasses/cups, clear or opaque
  • Straws, toothpaste and ointment tubes
  • Vinyl binders, 3 ring binders, spiral notebooks
  • Plastic tubs (cottage cheese, yogurt, baby wipes) 

METAL CANS

  • Aerosol or paint cans,
  • Propane tanks (empty or full)
  • Construction debris; nails, pipes or car parts
  • Pots and pans, toasters or irons, appliances 

GLASS BOTTLES & JARS

  • Ceramic /porcelain cups/dishes, drink glasses, eyeglasses
  • Fluorescent tubes or light bulbs
  • Mirrors, picture frame glass, window glass

Note: recycling symbols on products are a uniform labeling system for manufacturers much like a nutrition label on a soupcan for consumers. It does not mean that the particular item is accepted for recycling. We accept only plastic BOTTLES and TUBS with a recycling symbol because they have enough market value to merit the cost of recycling.
