The Sanitation Department is responsible for the weekly collection of garbage, yard waste, and recyclables. In 2009, this department had collected and disposed of approx. 13,100 cubic yards of household wastes and 4,750 cubic yards of compacted yard waste from curb-side collection The Maumelle Transfer Station collected 4,920 cubic yards of solid waste and 1,880 cubic yards of green waste in 2009. Our Sanitation Department recently purchased two fully automated trucks in 2009 and implemented fully automated solid waste collection in February 2010. We currently have 15 employees in this department. We provide weekly collection for our residents for household solid waste, yard waste and recyclables. We schedule our collection routes by neighborhoods. Please look at our route schedule to find your scheduled day. We provide sanitation carts for household solid waste, recycle bins for curbside recycling, and yard waste must be bagged, bundled and tied. AUTOMATED TRASH COLLECTION FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AUTOMATED TRASH PICK UP TIPS FOR RESIDENTS AUTOMATED TRASH COLLECTION SUMMARY GUIDELINES FOR RESIDENTIAL HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE PICKUP The city provides each household with one 95-gallon cart and weekly fully automated curbside collection service. Upon request residents may receive a smaller, 65-gallon cart instead. Additional carts are available for a fee by calling 501-851-2888. The 2nd cart requested is an additional $3.50 a month. Any additional carts beyond the first two are billed at $5.00 a month. The wheeled carts are attractive, weather resistant and easy to maneuver, with tight-fitting lids that reduce problems with animals and other pests. Carts must be set out for collection by 7 a.m. on collection day, or after 5 p.m. the previous night. After collection, carts must be removed from the curb before 7 a.m. the following day and stored in a convenient place at your house. The following specifications must be met in order for no interruption in you sanitation services. We will come back at your request for a $10.00 return trip fee.
Only typical household garbage goes into the cart. The garbage must be placed in plastic bags and sealed to prevent litter and to help keep your cart clean. Any garbage outside the trash cart will not be collected. . ORDINANCE NO. 584- Sec. 62.1, “Only items placed within the authorized Maumelle Container will be collected. Additional cans or bags separate from the authorized container will not be collected.” Your options are to take it to the transfer station during operating hours, wait until the next collection day, or schedule a special collection by calling 501-851-2888. Please see below for details. Do not put yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, or tree trimmings in the cart. These items can be scheduled for collection by calling Public Works at 501-851-2888. Do not place hot coals from your barbecue grill in the garbage cart. SPECIAL COLLECTION REQUEST CREWS DO NOT PICK UP
See the HHW section for proper disposal. YARD WASTE INFORMATION Yard waste pickups are conducted at the curbside once a week. Yard waste consists of grass trimmings, leaves, pine needles, small tree limbs and any holiday décor that grows (pumpkins, hay bales, Christmas tress). City Specifications to be picked up on weekly Yard Waste route for no additional fees:
If the resident has large amounts of brush, or does not wish to adhere by the city specs on yard waste collection it can still be picked up for a small fee at the residents request by calling 851-2812 and asking for a special pick up. * See Special Collection Request for additional information, or they may take the yard waste to the transfer station for a nominal fee. *See Transfer Station for additional information. Please do not set out bags and bundles more than 12 hours prior to collection. No other items may be mixed in, i.e., household waste, rocks or dirt. If they are, the bag cannot be collected for composting CURBSIDE RECYCLING The city’s recycle truck collects newspaper and aluminum cans only. Public Works will furnish the recycling bin (upon request) and a calendar of scheduled collection days. The bin should be placed curbside prior to 7:00 a.m. for pickup. If you will put cans on bottom and newspaper on top it saves time for the driver to ensure prompt collection. *Hint- On windy days you may want to weigh down the paper with a rock to prevent it from blowing away. Newsprint Newsprint must be dry, clean and unsoiled (free of wax, plastics and other contaminants). *Hint: If the paper has a jagged edge, it is newsprint. Aluminum Cans Rinse beverage cans. No tin cans, foil, siding or pie pans. Hint: If in doubt, use a refrigerator magnet. If the magnet sticks, it is not aluminum. For more information you may contact Public Works administration:
