Maumelle Tree Board
Minutes
April 13, 2011
The Maumelle Tree Board met Wednesday, April 13, 2011, at 6:00pm in the Maumelle Community Center. Present were Dave Wahlfeld, Donna Meeks and Pete Rausch.
Dave called the meeting to order. A motion was made by Dave and seconded by Donna to approve the minutes of the March 2011meeting. The motion carried. Donna gave the Treasurer’s report. The current balance is $248.81. $1935.00 was paid to Bemis Tree Farm for the March Maumelle Boulevard tree planting.
Dave reported that this year’s Maumelle Boulevard tree planting was completed as scheduled on Saturday, March 12. Bemis Tree Farm planted twelve trees………6 Shumard Oaks and 6 Red Maples. The Boulevard tree planting between South Odom and Audubon is complete. Pete will apply a Roundup treatment around all the trees; and Pete and Dave will follow up with a bag of mulch around each tree.
Pete suggested that the board do a survey of required planted trees around recent commercial developments (Kroger, Walgreens, etc.) and multi-family complex remodeling. Several of the trees have been killed by the recent drought. The findings will be turned into the City for follow up treatments.
The Board and City received news that Maumelle was named a Tree City USA Community for 2010. This is the fourth year for the award. Dave will take the press release to City Hall for publication.
Dave reported on his meeting with Mayor Watson concerning the future of the Tree Board. Karen Holliday and Dave Wahlfeld terms expire on June 30 leaving the Board with 4 vacancies and Donna Meeks the only remaining Board member. Two main alternatives were discussed. One alternative is filling the vacant board seats; and the other alternative would be to transfer the Board responsibilities to the Maumelle Parks and Recreation Department.
The next board meeting will be the second Wednesday, April 13th at 6:00 p.m. at the Maumelle Community Center.
There being no further business, Dave adjourned the meeting at 7:00 p.m.
